The Social Teaching blog investigates the use of social media tools and social marketing techniques in order to create engaging and effective virtual learning environments for youths. In collaboration with the Hispanic AIDS Forum’s (HAF) Latino Youth in Action program, and students in two graduate level courses in the New School Media Studies department entitled “Social Marketing with Social Media” and “Virtual Learning Environments,” Social Teaching’s main project will be to work on developing social, online learning modules with and for the Latino LGBTQ community. Learning module objectives are in line with the goals of HAF and LYIA: to improve health outcomes for Latinos in NYC who are affected by HIV and other chronic illnesses through prevention, education, and wellness programs. In working with LYIA, we hope to help Latino and other youths of the LGBTQ community develop positive self-identities and engage with their community, to educate them on issues of sexual health, stigmatization, physical violence, and substance abuse, through the use of online and social media tools.
